Welcome to 6th grade Reading and Language Arts! My name is Ms. Thompson and I am looking forward to a wonderful year! You will be able to find all assignments on this website under the appropriate tab at the top, as well as access many other useful links such as the writer's notebook. I have compiled this notebook to assist students with the writing process and to help them become independent writers while reaching their full potentials. If you ever have any questions feel free to email me at: [email protected]
I need everyone to have two notebooks used only for my class. One will be used for a reading log and the other will be a journal. We will keep both of these in the classroom. Highlighters would also come in handy, but are not required. You may purchase those at Walgreens for 67 cents each.
EVERYONE needs to get their digital driver's license AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! Starting this year, we are allowing students to bring their own devices (phones, ipods, e-readers, ipads, etc.) to school. I am very excited about this! I participated in a workshop this summer and have some cool plans for class! I believe this will allow students to become fully engaged in class and learn at a greater level. In order to take advantage of this, though, a student must have his or her DDL (digital driver's license). I would like every student to get their DDL even if he or she does not have a device to bring to class because I will have a couple extras for students to use. The link below will take y0u to the district website where you can follow directions to get your DDL.
This year, the 6th grade ELA are doing standards based grading. Each assignment and assessment will be focused on one or more standards. You child can receive a 3 (mastery), a 2 (close to mastery), or a 1 (needs lots of work) for each standard. Summative exams will count as 70% of the child's grade. Students who score a 1 or a 2 should ask for extra practice on the standards that they are struggling with. After a student has completed extra practice and I feel he or she is ready to reassess, the student will have the opportunity to take a summative test again to raise his or her grade on those summative standards. You may access the extra practice exercises by going to the "Target Practice" tab at the top. After a student has completed one, he or she MUST turn it in to me. Please see the link below to access a Power Point that explains standards based grading in more detail, as well as why we are doing this. If you ever have any questions, feel free to email me.
